Optical Illusion Art - Is What You Get Really What You See? Optical illusion art, also known as op art, is a mathematically-based genre that produces optical illusions. It uses the repetition of form and color to create moiré patterns that give rise to illusions. It also distorts our sense of depth, causing foreground-background confusion, as well as other perplexing effects. Optical illusion art requires math ingenuity, technical skills and meticulous planning. Because it manipulates the rules of perception, a viewer trying to decipher such a painting may observe movement, hidden images, three-dimensional forms, and other simulation. History of Optical Illusion Art In October 1964, Time Magazine first used the term "optical art" in an article that referred to illusionary painting as a new type of art, when, in fact, works in this style had already been produced 30 years prior. One such artwork is the 1938 painting entitled 'Zebras' by Victor Vasarely, whom many consider to be the pioneer of this abstract movement. Other artists such as Bridget Riley, Jesus-Rafael Soto, Richard Anuszkiewicz, and Francois Morellet also created images that could be categorized as op art. In 1965, a major exhibition called "The Responsive Eye" truly captured the public's interest and popularized the movement. Exotic Birds can be Fun and Very Entertaining

I have had four exotic birds for five years now, and let me tell you, I wouldn't give them up for anything. At times I get mad at them because of all the mess they make, but I get over it. Yes they can make a real mess, especially on the floor. You don't want to have them on carpet. It seems like they don't do all their dirty business in the cage, it happens to end up on the floor and once it dries, it is like trying to chisel cement off the floor. My one bird, an umbrella cockatoo just loves to throw her food everywhere. I find it on the floor, windowsill and in the bottom of her cage. You got to keep an eye on her. She use to take her food and water bowls out of the bracket and dump them, now we have a c-clamp holding them down tight so she can't get them out. If you don't clean out the cage right away, in a couple days the seeds start to grow. Believe me, it happened to me. I went away for a couple days and filled up their food and water bowls to last three days. I came home and found plants growing in my cockatoo's cage. What a mess. She also figured out how to open her cage and would get out and open the other three cages. I ended up putting a c-clamp on her door too, to keep her in.

She is a real loving bird. I get her out of the cage and hold her close to my chest and rub under her feathers, and she lays her head on my chest and falls asleep. What a sweetheart. There was one time she wasn't so sweet, that is the time she bit my three quarter diamond out of my ring. Man I grabbed her by the throat and turned her upside down yelling, spit it out now Chloe or I will wring your neck. Out it came bouncing on the floor.

Then there is Rubin, my African Grey. He talks in that deep voice that sounds like a man. He does a lot of talking. His favorite thing to say is, Sebrina, shut up. She is another bird I have. But back to Rubin, that is one bird that drove up crazy for a while until we realize that he mocks every kind of noise. That bird had me running to the clothes dryer, and I wasn't even doing laundry, the telephone and it wasn't even ringing and my microwave and I wasn't cooking anything, He sounds like all of them. He is really good at mimicking sounds. I remember late at night, I was home by myself. I heard a man cough. I froze. It couldn't be my husband, he was away on a trip and besides the voice was too deep. I was scared to death. Then it hit me, it was the bird. My husband taught him to whistle the Andy Griffin theme song. You should hear him, it sound good and he does an excellent cat call.

Then come Sebrina. Another sweetheart and very talkative. She talks the most and sings. She sings two verses of Singing in the Rain and all of Popeye the Sailor Man and even puts in the toot toots. When I feed her. She always says "Want some breakfast, hmmmmm popcorn. Go out the door and she says, bye bye, see you later alligator. She use to cuss but we broke her of that. I hear I love you and Sebrina, are you momma's girl, all the time. All you got to do is come out of the bedroom in the morning and she starts to talk and sing. She is very entertaining.

Then comes Sammy our macaw. I can't say much for the bird other than he favors my husband and I am deathly scared of him. He has a beak that would break you finger if he got it in his mouth. My husband handles him all the time, but let me go near him and he wants to eat me for dinner. I was leaning against his cage while taking care of another bird and he took a hunk out of my shoulder with his beak. That was enough for me. I feed him from outside his cage, if he needs his water changed, which is every day, my husband takes care of that. One thing I can say, he is a very colorful and beautiful bird.

Some exotic birds can live as long as 90 years. They will out live me. The only thing is, who do I will them to? My kids already told me don't will them to them..... I am sure they were only kidding. My son would take them in a heartbeat. He now owns a cockatoo and loving it to death. A bird is like a dog or cat, you get attached to them and they end up like being like one of the family.

2010 UCLA Football Predictions
UCLA needed a win over Temple in the EagleBank Bowl to take over a winning record last season, as they finished up the 2009 campaign at 7-6. The Bruins however were just 3-6 in Pac-10 play, finishing ahead of only Arizona State and Washington State. The Bruins head into the 2010 season with 13 starters back, and enter the third season under head coach Rick Neuheisel. The talent is starting to grow on this team, and while they likely won't win the conference this season, they could really surprise a lot of teams. Here is a quick breakdown of what the Bruins will look like this season, plus my prediction on where they finish the year in the Pac-10.

Offense:

The Bruins are hoping to get improved play out of quarterback Kevin Prince, who enters into his sophomore season after a pretty good freshman run, where he threw for 2,050 yards and eight touchdowns. If Prince improves as everyone expects he will, the Bruins should have one of their best offenses in years.

The running game will feature another talented sophomore in Johnathan Franklin, who led the Bruins with 566 yards and five touchdowns in 2009. Also back in the mix in the running game is junior Derrick Coleman, who had 244 yards on just 54 carries last season.

The Bruins will get their top two threats in the passing game back for the upcoming season, in juniors Nelson Rosario and Taylor Embree, but they may end up taking a seat behind the talented freshman Malcolm Jones, who is expected to start right away. The Bruins are expected to fill the void at tight end with sophomore Joseph Fauria.

The offensive line welcomes back four starters from last season, but will have to find a new starting left tackle for the upcoming season. Heading into the fall it looks as though senior Micah Kia will take over that responsibility, as he has starting experience but was forced to sit out last season with a ACL injury.

Defense:

The Bruins only return five starters on this side of the ball, and were hit the hardest up front where they lose three starters, including the very talented defensive tackle Brian Price. Senior Kevin Carter and junior Nate Chandler are expected to take over in the middle, while freshman Owamagbe Odighizuwa looks to make an immediate impact starting opposite of junior Datone Jones at defensive end.

At linebacker the Bruins will have one of the best linebackers in the conference in junior strong-side linebacker Akeem Ayers, but they must replace both other spots this fall. It looks as though junior Steve Sloan will take over in the middle, while junior Sean Westgate is the leading candidate to take over on the weak side.

The Bruins bring back three starters in the secondary, and this unit will likely be one of the best the Pac-10 has to offer this season. A couple of sophomores will start at corner in Sheldon Price and Aaron Hester, and Price is expected to be one of the best in conference after a solid freshman season. At safety the Bruins have two very talented playmakers in junior free safety Rahim Moore and junior strong safety Tony Dye.

PAC 10 Prediction - Tie for 7th: The Bruins are a tough team to predict in 2010, as they have a lot of very good young talent. Despite the five conference home games the schedule is very tough for the Bruins this season, as the Pac-10 really looks strong in 2010. This team has a chance to be one of the surprise stories of the season, and could easily finish much higher than I have them predicted

On Friday, March 11, 2011 at 2:46 pm, a 9.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Japan. This lead to a chain reaction of events leading to a tsunami, and a nuclear disaster as one of Japan's power stations leaked radiation. What are the global effects of these three disasters?

1. Higher Energy Prices

Energy prices are soaring because of the fear that the current unrest in the Middle East is affecting the global supply of oil. The disaster in the Fukusima power station highlights the need for Japan to now import traditional energy sources to replace any energy produced through its nuclear facilities- which will add to more demand for natural gas, and oil.

2. Infrastructural Renewal Projects

Both the earthquake and the tsunami have badly damaged much of Japan's infrastructure. Obviously a rebuilding phase would mean a government with a high debt problem, would have to invest in the reconstruction of those areas affected by this triple disaster. This could become the responsibility of the corporate sector, who dominate Japan's economy.

3. Banking and Insurance Losses

Whether Insurance companies pay out billions of dollars of claims due to the the earthquake and tsunami, remains to be seen, but the "man-made" nuclear disaster could become their liability. Japan's global banking and insurance industries may be forced to reinvest at home, depleting any global investments outside the nation.

4. Change of Government?

Before these three disasters, ordinary Japanese had lost their confidence in another scandal hit government. How the government reaction to these three disasters, and the subsequent rebuilding process, could change the public perceptions of their leaders- but in the long term, we could see more changes inside the top echelon of the Japanese government.

5. Environmental Perceptions

After the nuclear disaster in Fukusima, many people are questioning the wisdom of building nuclear energy plants in a quake zone. Depending on the radiation levels, and the area contaminated, a worldwide reaction to the use of nuclear energy could result in the ending of the Obama nuclear energy program in the USA, and even France's ambitious energy program.

6. Money Markets

Japan remains the worlds third largest economy, but also like the United States, one of its biggest debtors. The value of the yen could fall, as banks spend on reconstruction projects, whilst the Government may be forced to raise taxes to pay for them. Some large Japanese corporations may cancel or put on hold overseas projects, re-investing these funds in rebuilding the areas affected by the earthquake.

7. Asian-Pacific Growth

China has the money and the economy in this region, but Japan is a second player in economic terms. Japanese companies invest in much of South East and North Asia, whilst the government often sponsor education & training programs in the region. Japan's contributions in the area, could shrink, leading to some fears of reduced growth.

The natural disasters of the earthquake and tsunami, have led to the man made nuclear disaster, and destruction of part of a high tech nation.. Japanese are resilient, inventive and industrious people, and should overcome the hurdles of reconstruction. However this does have a short term effect on the global economy, and a long term effect on the future of the nuclear power industry.
