Four Legs and an Interview

I have learned that it is always wise to interview a potential client before you hire them. In fact it is a good practice to interview anyone who is in any type of service business. My husband and I adopted four month old Rocky from a rescue shelter. The shelter told us he was a cross between a Lab and an Akita. However, he had the head of a pit bull and the eyes of a Rottweiler. There must have been a third party around when he was conceived.

As expected, Rocky immediately bonded with my husband, grandkids and me. However, Rocky decided that his bonding duties ended with us. A few weeks later we discovered Rocky was afraid of people because he ran away from anyone that spoke to him. It was evident he was in sore need of some type of behavior training.

A local dog training franchise in our area advertised an advanced training method which guaranteed success for any breed of dog or they would give you four weeks of free lessons.

The trainer arrived with briefcase in hand to demonstrate his advanced dog training method. Immediately, Rocky took sanctuary in his crate. In order to make Rocky feel more comfortable the trainer recommended his chair be positioned directly in front of Rocky's crate. To my surprise, Rocky was coaxed out of his crate. Things were going pretty smoothly as the trainer explained to me how to gain the dog's trust and that he was going to teach me and my husband a special dog language. A language, that apparently only dog's and dog trainers know.

The trainer began to growl (explaining to me he was speaking Rocky's special language). He threw a short piece of link chain on the floor near Rocky with a loud hacking, ack, ack, guttural sound, akin to clearing your throat before you spit. This action was meant to instill fear in the dog and it worked. Rocky retreated to his crate. I began to have second thoughts.

This interview wasn't going too well. Thirty minutes later after much coaxing and pleading with Rocky, the trainer conceded that he and Rocky had obviously gotten off on the wrong foot. The idea was for the trainer to leave the house and come back ten minutes later to start all over. I think he forgot that dogs don't forget someone who has tried to hit them with a chain in the space of ten minutes. The trainer had a lot at stake. He declared that there was no dog alive that he could not train. His reputation was on the line.

The minute the trainer went out the door, I noticed he had left his briefcase sitting next to the chair directly in front of Rocky's crate. I was not the only one in the room who noticed this.

In walks the trainer. Rocky feels secure in his crate and the trainer feels secure as he gets down on all fours and sticks his face into the crate. The growl (Rocky's, not the trainer's) sounded like a locomotive as it gathers up speed. The trainer never did offer me a free training session. I guess he was too much in a hurry to leave.

I cannot understand how such players such as Ganguly, Tendulkar, Dravid and the rest can let the fans down time and again. Sometimes it seems that they are not really interested in playing and that they away their wicket easily. If that is the case then they should leave and let other more able and willing youngsters take a shot. They will not fare much worse in any case. What will they do? Lose. They lose anyway and to any cricket playing nation in the world!

Laugh Yourself to Better Health

How many times have you heard, laughter is the best medicine? Did you see the movie Patch Adams? Patch Adams is a real doctor who believes humor can be healthy. Laughter and humor have been linked to better health physically and psychologically. I would like my doctor to write me a prescription for laughter as needed throughout the day.

A good belly laugh can really center a person. Have you ever been with friends or family and the laughter and humor is flowing without effort and for those moments any depression or pain that may have been weighing you down are gone...you are centered, unencumbered. If only you could keep that feeling forever.

There have been studies that have shown a link between humor, laughter and positive attitude with improved health and improved self esteem. There was a study done where undergrad college students answered questions on a Coping Humor Scale (CHS) and the Situational Humor Response Questionnaire (SHRQ). They found that those with the highest scores had lower levels of loneliness, depression and stress. They also had higher self esteem. They deduced that students with a sense of humor perceived themselves as having a higher quality of life.

Humor has been used in different settings and for different reasons. One group of people that were studied were Midwestern females in their 50's diagnosed with breast cancer. The patients were asked about the coping mechanisms that they used for depression and pain. Topping the list was prayer and spiritual healing. After prayer was support groups, humor and massage. These coping mechanisms fall under something called complementary therapy (CT). CT is those things that may not heal or cure but make us feel better. Of course humor alone cannot heal a disease. But used in conjunction with conventional medicine, CT can alleviate pain and negative feelings.

As a paramedic, I have transported thousands of patients and humor has been a tool, in my med bag, that I used when I felt is was appropriate. There have also been times in my career, when working with a new medic and the inexperienced partner pulls humor from the bag at just the wrong time. Believe me it can be disastrous. When the patient doesn't laugh and the family gives a disapproving stare...that is when damage control and a heart felt apology is required.

I believe in humor as a mental health staple. Everyday we need people around us who make us smile and lend some laughter to our day. An apple a day may be healthy but a laugh a day can give you immediate gratification.

Exotic Birds can be Fun and Very Entertaining

I have had four exotic birds for five years now, and let me tell you, I wouldn't give them up for anything. At times I get mad at them because of all the mess they make, but I get over it. Yes they can make a real mess, especially on the floor. You don't want to have them on carpet. It seems like they don't do all their dirty business in the cage, it happens to end up on the floor and once it dries, it is like trying to chisel cement off the floor. My one bird, an umbrella cockatoo just loves to throw her food everywhere. I find it on the floor, windowsill and in the bottom of her cage. You got to keep an eye on her. She use to take her food and water bowls out of the bracket and dump them, now we have a c-clamp holding them down tight so she can't get them out. If you don't clean out the cage right away, in a couple days the seeds start to grow. Believe me, it happened to me. I went away for a couple days and filled up their food and water bowls to last three days. I came home and found plants growing in my cockatoo's cage. What a mess. She also figured out how to open her cage and would get out and open the other three cages. I ended up putting a c-clamp on her door too, to keep her in.

She is a real loving bird. I get her out of the cage and hold her close to my chest and rub under her feathers, and she lays her head on my chest and falls asleep. What a sweetheart. There was one time she wasn't so sweet, that is the time she bit my three quarter diamond out of my ring. Man I grabbed her by the throat and turned her upside down yelling, spit it out now Chloe or I will wring your neck. Out it came bouncing on the floor.

Then there is Rubin, my African Grey. He talks in that deep voice that sounds like a man. He does a lot of talking. His favorite thing to say is, Sebrina, shut up. She is another bird I have. But back to Rubin, that is one bird that drove up crazy for a while until we realize that he mocks every kind of noise. That bird had me running to the clothes dryer, and I wasn't even doing laundry, the telephone and it wasn't even ringing and my microwave and I wasn't cooking anything, He sounds like all of them. He is really good at mimicking sounds. I remember late at night, I was home by myself. I heard a man cough. I froze. It couldn't be my husband, he was away on a trip and besides the voice was too deep. I was scared to death. Then it hit me, it was the bird. My husband taught him to whistle the Andy Griffin theme song. You should hear him, it sound good and he does an excellent cat call.

Then come Sebrina. Another sweetheart and very talkative. She talks the most and sings. She sings two verses of Singing in the Rain and all of Popeye the Sailor Man and even puts in the toot toots. When I feed her. She always says "Want some breakfast, hmmmmm popcorn. Go out the door and she says, bye bye, see you later alligator. She use to cuss but we broke her of that. I hear I love you and Sebrina, are you momma's girl, all the time. All you got to do is come out of the bedroom in the morning and she starts to talk and sing. She is very entertaining.

Then comes Sammy our macaw. I can't say much for the bird other than he favors my husband and I am deathly scared of him. He has a beak that would break you finger if he got it in his mouth. My husband handles him all the time, but let me go near him and he wants to eat me for dinner. I was leaning against his cage while taking care of another bird and he took a hunk out of my shoulder with his beak. That was enough for me. I feed him from outside his cage, if he needs his water changed, which is every day, my husband takes care of that. One thing I can say, he is a very colorful and beautiful bird.

Some exotic birds can live as long as 90 years. They will out live me. The only thing is, who do I will them to? My kids already told me don't will them to them..... I am sure they were only kidding. My son would take them in a heartbeat. He now owns a cockatoo and loving it to death. A bird is like a dog or cat, you get attached to them and they end up like being like one of the family.

Dell Inspiron 10.1-Inch Netbook Review

The Dell Inspiron iM1012-687OBK is an actually a very capable PC with a very nice size factor at 7.74 by 10.55 by 1.26 inches, weighing about three pounds. Featuring a 160 GB, 5,400-spin hard drive, it has more than enough space to hold not only the Windows 7 operating system with which it comes equipped, but also the suite of features that this version of the Microsoft product features.

A powerful, small machine, it is driven by Intel's low-powered Atom series of processors. The Dell uses the N450 which runs at 1.66 GHz which, when one examines it, makes this a very powerful machine for its size. It can be equipped with up to 1 GB of SDRAM. Interestingly, most tablets come with a minimum of 4 to 8 GB of RAM built in and you can expand that amount to as much as 64 GB with microSDHC or microSDXC memory cards. The key here is that this memory serves double-duty as it not only holds the operating system, any apps you choose and data, but it also holds anything you write to memory so that while it may appear that 64 GB of memory is more than enough for most average days - it usually is - if there is a day when you are spending a lot of time on the net reading mail, making notes and downloading and fixing presentations, then that 64 GB becomes crowded quite quickly.

The netbook, on the other hand, offers independent storage. The Dell, for example, has a 160 GB 5,400-spin hard drive that not only holds the operating system, but also any applications that come with Windows 7, and any other applications you download. It is true there is only 1 GB of SDRAM available for the Netbook's operation, however, when you set up "virtual memory" on the hard drive (page and swap files), you have extra space available so that if you run out of data space in the RAM, the data is then placed in the page and swap area as either the next instruction for a program or the next piece of data the Netbook is holding. Still, the 1 GB of RAM looks anemic as compared to the 2 or more that you find in other Netbooks on the market.

And, even though the Netbook does have onboard storage, a tablet such as the iPad or Samsung with their 64 GB of memory still sets up the rest of the memory as a virtual hard disk that is instantly available. Data is then offloaded into the "clouds" that are now being set up by the major computer firms so that even though there is no extra storage, the tablets still hold an advantage.

Where tablets fall down is in the availability of a QWERTY-style keyboard. One must use a special application to open the touchscreen-based keyboard that cuts your usable screen area about in half. The Netbook, on the other hand, maintains a full 10.1-inch WSVGA screen (1024 by 600) depth without using half the screen as a keyboard. The tablet's keyboard, by the way, is good for texting, but not for touch-typing.

Indeed, that is where the Netbook holds the edge because you have a full complement of computer features to draw upon, including USB ports, VGA outputs. Most Netbooks can go wired as part of your home network or have a small WiFi radio system installed so that they can also use your WiFi router, as well. That makes them versatile.

Let's be fair about this, also, the tablet will shine as an eReader because that is essentially its birthright, while the Netbook is really a lightweight laptop that's not quite tablet or even sub laptop. Indeed, the best way to describe one is a sublaptop light.
