How To Buy Clothes That Will Be An Investment
We buy clothing for a number of reasons. Ranging from genuine need to or because it looked good on the hanger. But whatever the reason, some of what we wear ends up being worn only once. Chances are, we spent good money on these outfits we never wear but are reluctant to get rid of them because it is tantamount to throwing cash away. To avoid throwing money down the drain, it is important to make clothing purchases that will be an investment and that we will enjoy wearing over and over until the garments are completely worn out. So how do we go about it?

Well, first of all, it should be noted that investment buys can be expensive because you are buying quality, durability and a garment that does not go out of fashion. However, you will be wearing investment clothing so often and for so long that it will end up being cheaper in the long run than the clothes you wear once and dislike. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to ensure that you are making an investment buy.

Make a list of what you need before you go shopping and stick with it. You don't want to go to the shops with the intention of buying a suit for work and return home sans suit but with yet another pair of high-heeled shoes that you fell in love with but know you will never have occasion to wear. That is not investment buying that is impulse buying. Furthermore, before you go out and buy a garment you should assess what purpose you are buying it for. For example, do you want to buy a coat because the winters are very cold where you live or are you looking for a trendy top to wear for casual nights out on the town? A good-quality coat that will keep you warm for years is an investment buy but a trendy top is not because it will date quickly. Thus, you will want to spend a lot more on the coat than the trendy top.

Once you have found the type of garment you are looking for, it is time to assess it on its individual merits.

Go for neutrals like black, white, navy, camel and brown usually go with everything and are a good choice. This season's fashion shades are not as they will date quickly and probably won't go so well with the rest of your wardrobe.

Choose good-quality fabrics like cotton, silk, wool and linen. All natural fabrics are best if you can find them. Synthetics may be durable but they are neither the most comfortable nor luxurious when worn next to the skin. The problem with natural fabrics is that they are often dry clean only and this will add to the cost of your purchase. Always check the washing instructions label before you buy so that you can decide whether you will want to pay for the additional cost of dry cleaning later on.

Another way to determine quality and durability and hence the potential of a garment as an investment buy is the finishing. There should be no loose threads and seams and hems should be neatly sewn and straight. Properly sewn button holes are another indication of quality so if the buttonholes show signs of fraying then, chances are, the garment isn't good quality.

Lastly, the best indicators of whether a garment is an investment buy are whether it fits your body properly, is comfortable and makes you look healthy. If these signs are there then you will most likely love the garment and wear it again and again!
