2012 Subaru Impreza Review and Road Test The 2012

Impreza is Subaru's bid to capture a larger piece of the lucrative small car market. The 2012 Impreza features a smaller version of Subaru's venerable boxer 4 cylinder engine and a new more light weight body and chassis. The interior is also all new. Subaru vehicles have always had a solid reputation for quality and in recent years high performance with the WRX line of Impreza models. What Subaru has not yet managed to do is build a mass-market compact car like Mazda's 3. The outgoing Impreza model is to blandly styled and to thirsty on fuel to appeal to the average compact car buyer. Subaru purists would be worried that this new Impreza has sacrificed some of its unique personality traits in order to become more popular. Purists need not worry the new Impreza still has a full time performance all-wheel drive system. The Candian Impreza is available in Base, Touring, Sport and Limited models. The US model is available in Base, Premium, Limited, Sport Premium and Sport limited. Our test car was a Canadian model. What everybody is wondering is; can this new Impreza effectively compete with the Honda Civic, Mazda 3 and Chevrolet Cruze for compact car market share? The inside of the Impreza follows in the footsteps of its predecessors; plain but functional and well constructed. The dash is made of a nice soft touch material and the quality of fit and finish is excellent. The gauge cluster in front of the driver is simple and easy to read. Taking a que from BMW there is an analogue fuel economy gauge in the lower right of the dash. The steering wheel feels solid and feels nice to hold in your hands. Stereo and heating and ventilation controls are all very no nonsense and simple in design and construction. Seats have good support and are comfortable, however they lack any option for power adjustment. All models have basic iPod line in capability with higher end touring models offering USB integration and bluetooth audio streaming. Top end Limited models include a Pioneer multimedia system. Overall the cabin of the Impreza is solidly built but is not very exciting. If you value utility over beauty you will be very happy with it. On the road the Impreza feels capable and sure-footed. Acceleration is adequate from the 2.0L 148 horsepower boxer engine, but it could not be called quick. The available CVT automatic transmission shifts quickly and helps to vastly improve fuel economy in the Impreza over the last model. The standard equipment manual transmission is nice to shift and has a high end notchy feel as you change gears. Touring models and above have an available paddle shift CVT automatic. Handling is the Impreza's strongest suit. The car grips the road amazingly well and the symmetrical all wheel drive system allows you to take challenging corners with ease even in bad weather. During hard cornering the Impreza exhibits minimal body roll. The steering wheel is responsive but still easy to turn in the parking lot. Interior noise levels are somewhat higher than average in this segment but aren't loud enough to be annoying. In terms of handling and performance across a wide variety of weather conditions, the Impreza has no equal in the compact car class. The bottom line: If you value function over form and are willing to pay a little extra then the Impreza is for you. Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/7179048
